Salento, also known as the Salento peninsula popularly known as the heel of Italy, is a subregion of Italy that stretches across the southern part of Puglia, between the Ionian Sea to the west and the Adriatic Sea to the east.
The inhabitants of the area, which includes the whole province of Lecce, almost all of Brindisi and Taranto part of that are distinguished by linguists and cultural characteristics very different from the rest of the region. From a historical point of view the Salento has been a member for many centuries of the area known as Terra d'Otranto
